Outreach at St. John's

Outreach activities at St. John's are varied and offer a wide spectrum of level of commitment. Any of us who are interested in being involved have something we can do, whether the time we have to offer is a lot or a little.

Feeding the Hungry

Newton Food Pantry – Each Sunday St. John’s takes a food donation collection at the offertory. Food for the pantry is brought to the altar along with our monetary offerings. Outreach ministers bring the food to the local pantry each week.

Cathedral Soup Kitchen in Boston – In every month with a 5th Monday, members of St John's gather downtown and help serve lunch at St Paul's Cathedral's Monday Lunch Program. St. John’s also provides dessert for the lunch that day. Those who are unable to join the work crew downtown can bake cookies and treats to support our ministry.

Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets – Each year the St. John’s Church School, together with the children of our on site preschool The Bowen Cooperative Nursery School, prepare baskets to provide a Thanksgiving Dinner for needy local residents. Members of St. John’s outreach ministry deliver the baskets.

Housing for the Homeless

Kayla House – As part of a program organized by Citizens for Affordable Housing in Newton Development Organization (CAN-DO). St. John’s supported a mother and her child at CAN-Do's Kayla House here in Newton. The Kayla House offers young single mothers the opportunity to live for two years in a newly renovated apartment at very low rent to make the transition to self-sufficiency. St. John’s has helped one young mother to set up housekeeping at the Kayla house and offered other support to her as needed.

Additional Outreach Opportunities

From time to time St. John’s sponsors collection drives for local charities. St. John’s participates in and supports the efforts of the international The Episcopal Relief and Development Fund, (formerly the Presiding Bishop's Fund), the national women’s United Thank Offering (UTO), the local Episcopal City Mission, the Massachusetts Council of Churches, and Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM). This June, we're planning a Mission Trip to the Gulf Coast. In addition to official church sponsored outreach initiatives, St. John’s supports members of the parish in the development of their own personal outreach ministry.

If you might be interested in joining us in any of these efforts, please let us know. We'd love to have you on board!
